31 Days of Giving, Day Eleven: Loaves and Fishes Ministries

Yesterday, Rachael Savoie and I spent our morning cleaning window blinds at Loaves and Fishes Ministries. Normally, cleaning isn’t my favorite activity, but I ended up having a great time. Upon our arrival, we received a warm greeting from the amazing staff, especially Amy who took us both on a tour of the shelter and answered some of our questions about the organization.

Loaves and Fishes Ministries was established in 1982 in response to the critical need for shelter in our Lansing community and the Ministry is run by entirely by donations and volunteers. They shelter 4 women and 6 men at a time. Guests are allowed to stay 14 days to get back on their feet. Transitional housing is also offered, which is different from the shelter. The women and childrens transitional housing is connected to the shelter and the men’s transitional housing is just down the street. After completing our volunteer service for the day, the staff of Loaves and Fishes invited us to return to volunteer anytime. I decided to take them up on their offer and will be helping out again next week.
