Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service

by Christopher Jackson, J.D., Communications Coordinator

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.Today is Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service. Established as a day of service in 1994, the day is meant to reflect on the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. through a national day of service across the country.

Dr. King recognized the power of service. He famously said, “Everyone can be great because everybody can serve.” Observing the Martin Luther King, Jr. federal holiday through service is a way to begin each year with a commitment to making your community a better place. Your service honors Dr. King’s life and teachings and helps meet national challenges.

The Corporation for National & Community Service has many resources on participating in this important day. If you are unable to participate in today’s day of service, you can always make your own day of service to reflect the spirit of Dr. King’s teachings. ELM is always looking for volunteers to help seniors in our community. For more information on volunteering at ELM, check out our website.
