Alzheimer’s Awareness Month

On May 16, 1987, a New York Times article announced that the famed actress, Rita Hayworth, had died in her New York apartment from Alzheimer’s disease at the age of 68. It was reported that the actress had been under the care of her daughter since 1981. The public disclosure of the cause of her death brought national and international attention to Alzheimer’s disease.

Since then, Alzheimer’s disease has been in the news and media, and many more people are aware of the devastating effects of this disease. November is National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month and many organizations are involved in raising awareness of Alzheimer’s disease, supporting caregivers, raising money for research, and providing support to individuals who suffer from Alzheimer’s disease.

Here are a few things to know about Alzheimer’s disease:

1. Alzheimer’s disease is usually detected until the end-stages.

2. Memory loss is NOT a part of normal aging.

3. Current drugs being used to treat Alzheimer’s disease are probably more effective than you think.

4. Alzheimer’s disease can be treated.

5. Based on intense research efforts over the past twenty years, and although it is unknown when, it is believed that better treatments for Alzheimer’s disease are on the way.

6. Take care of your heart, keep your brain healthy.

7. Managing risk factors can delay or prevent cognitive problems later in life.
