MAPRP Success Story: Mr. K

By Sandra Wisnewski, J.D., Director of the Mid-America Pension Rights Project

The Mid-America Pension Rights Project (MAPRP) assists clients with pension and 401(k) issues.  There are no age or income eligibility restrictions, and there is never a charge for services provided by MAPRP. The Mid-America Pension Rights Project works to find answers and solutions to your pension-related problem.  Just ask Mr. K.

Mr. K worked for a municipality for over 30 years. He began collecting his pension at age 62. At that time Mr. K received a pension benefit of $146.00 a month.  Mr. K knew that this amount was incorrect and contacted the plan administrator many times, but received no answer as to why his benefit was so low. After six years of receiving this amount, Mr. K decided to contact MAPRP.

Mr. K’s case was assigned to one of the pension attorneys.  The pension attorney made a written inquiry to the plan on Mr. K’s behalf. After several emails, calls, and letters, the plan finally determined that Mr. K’s benefit was too low. Mr. K received a $20,000 retroactive payment, and his pension benefit went from $146.00 to over $900.00 a month!

The Pension Project is funded by the Federal government through a grant provided by the Administration for Community Living, and is a program of Elder Law of Michigan, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit.

Since the program began in 1998, the Pension Project has assisted over 13,000 clients and has recovered over 66 million dollars in pension benefits. The Pension Project assists clients in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee.
