May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month

Being physically active does wonders for our bodies no matter our age or size. According to the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, we should encourage those around us to be physically active as well, especially in the month of May because it is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month.

The Office of Disease Prevention and Health indicates the following reasons why physical fitness is so important to our health and well-being:

  1. Lower the risk of falls;
  2. Improve cognitive function (such as learning skills); and
  3. Lower the risk of certain diseases (heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and some types of cancer).

Physical fitness can be a simple walk after dinner; a bike ride; a small amount of physical activity added on to your daily routine; or a slightly more involved physical activity such as yoga, tai chi, water aerobics, and Zumba.

During the month of May, encourage your family, friends, and community to become more active and more physically fit. The Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion is encouraging everyone to post on social media and use the hashtag, #MoveInMay.
