Elder Law of Michigan’s mission is to give you the resources you need to make informed decisions. As part of our commitment, we believe it is important to share resources with you that may be helpful when you are concerned about potential identity theft or scams.Recently, an anti-fraud hotline was created by the Senate Special Committee on Aging. This hotline was created to make it easier for you to ask questions and get help about activity that you believe may be fraudulent.
Here are some examples of the kinds of concerns that you may want help with:

Someone from the Social Security Administration calls and wants your Social Security number to “verify” your account

You receive an email about borrowing money on the internet and it “sounds too good to be true”.

You’re told you just won the lottery and all you need to do is give your bank account number over the phone to get your deposit.
As a general rule, If it sounds too good to be true, most likely it isn’t true. Take that moment to call the hotline and ask questions rather than supply important information to others.
The anti-fraud hotline is staffed by investigators who have experience with identity theft, Medicare and Social Security fraud, and other issues. The goal of the Senate Special Committee on Aging is “to identify and put a stop to the cruel scams that hurt seniors and their families.” Along with providing you with important information, they can refer your issue to the appropriate authorities if needed.
Anyone with information about suspected fraudulent activities or with concerns can call 1-855-303-9470 Monday through Friday from 9AM to 5PM EST or contact the Anti Fraud hotline through its website http://www.aging.senate.gov/fraud-hotline .
