COVID-19 and Older Adults

By Michelle Jackson, Screening Coordinator at Elder Law of Michigan

COVID-19 started in our country in 2019. The past six months have been an incredibly challenging time for all Americans, especially older adults and anyone with underlying health conditions.

I have the privilege of working at Elder Law of Michigan and speaking to many older adults in Michigan. Most people feel that one must take COVID-19 very seriously. Many people must stay away from their much-loved family and friends to stay safe which is difficult but necessary. Older adults often talk on the phone as birthdays, and special occasions are often drive-bys with waves of love.

Events, like showers and weddings, that we planned last year prior to COVID-19, are now suddenly postponed. There is nothing much to look forward to with our families and friends so far apart but we will get through this and be stronger than ever. Here are some ideas to keep us busy during this trying time. If you have a yard you can garden, if you live in an apartment call your neighbors and pretend you are having a party. I say just hang in there because everyone is special. Older adults and their wisdom are needed, when we can resume normal activity they will continue to school others. Just remember YOU ARE VERY SPECIAL.
