Secondhand Wardrobe

by Mary Beth Daley, Staff Accountant

Are you a budget conscious senior who still has a passion for fashion? Do you have a closet or two that needs a good decluttering? Are you committed to reducing your carbon footprint and preserving this earth for future generations? Are you someone who enjoys the thrill of the hunt…searching for buried treasures? If you answered yes to any, or all, of these questions then here are a few things to consider:

  1. National Secondhand Wardrobe Day is celebrated on August 25th.
  2. You can support your local secondhand/thrift stores by either shopping or donating.
  3. You can bless your community by shopping yard or garage sales. Don’t forget to look at items with both a critical AND creative eye. You can alter a garment to meet your needs. Does it need decorative buttons or do you need to shorten slacks to make a pair of capris?
  4. National Secondhand Wardrobe is a great opportunity to recycle, repurpose and reuse and thus saving our landfills! According to the EPA Office of Solid Waste, on the average, Americans throw away more than 68 pounds of clothing/cloth every year. That totals more than 10 Million TONS of cloth and clothing every year in this country alone.

Have I got your attention yet?!

Whatever your reason, get out there and practice a bit of “Retail Therapy”…just be mindful of the pitfalls. Make sure you allow the time necessary for digging for treasures it does take time and effort. Also make sure you have a need for the clothing you are buying or this trip’s treasures could become next month’s trash!
