On Tuesday, March 27, 2018, I was fortunate to attend the Capital Area United Way 2018 Volunteer Recognition Celebration held at the Kellogg Hotel & Conference Center. It was a night that allowed volunteers from all over the area come together to celebrate all the marvelous work that they are doing in our community.
This year, I had the honor of nominating Sandra (Sandi) Stevens, one of our amazing volunteers here at Elder Law of Michigan for the Volunteer of the Year Award. Sandi is a hardworking and devoted volunteer. She helps with our monthly outreach mailings and makes sure we have enough materials for outreach events.
Each year, the United Way selects a theme for their campaign and this year the theme is “You’re a Local Hero!” At the event, there were different superhero themed decorations and as you walked into the room, there were green lights highlighting the walls and a photo booth in the back-left corner of the room with superhero props, and superhero sayings displayed as the centerpieces on the tables.
Jim, Sandi’s husband, and I celebrated Sandi and her devotion to Elder Law of Michigan, Inc. We were fed a wonderful 3-course dinner, which was sponsored by the Dean Transportation. The event provided highlights from United Way and presentations about the importance of volunteerism, and thereafter awards were handed out. There were a lot of wonderful individuals nominated for the Volunteer of the Year Award in 2018.
Sandi did not win the Volunteer of the Year Award, but said: “Even though I didn’t win, it was an honor to be nominated.” Sandi was happy to receive a recognition certificate from United Way.
