31 Days of Giving, Day Twelve: The Holiday Mail for Heroes Program

With the holidays upon us I would like to highlight a program of the Red Cross, Holiday Mail for Heroes, that Elder Law of Michigan decided to take part in. This program collects holiday cards between October and December and then distributes them at Military installations and veteran hospitals. The cards are sent by tens of thousands of Americans each year to show support and … Continue reading 31 Days of Giving, Day Twelve: The Holiday Mail for Heroes Program

31 Days of Giving, Day Ten: Closing the Digital Gap

For my day of volunteering, I spent the afternoon with Closing the Digital Gap (CDG). Their mission is to provide low-income residents and seniors with basic computer and Internet skills. This gives them the opportunity to make connections within the community, learn valuable job skills and connect them with important resources. I spent some of my time there helping the director with their upcoming Christmas … Continue reading 31 Days of Giving, Day Ten: Closing the Digital Gap

31 Days of Giving, Day Nine: Meridian Senior Center

Last Friday, I had the pleasure of volunteering at the Meridian Senior Center. During my time volunteering, I held a holiday craft workshop alongside my co-worker Jessica Sanchez. In the spirit of the holidays, we decided to bring craft materials so that people could make some holiday ornaments. Only about six people signed up for the workshop, but that allowed Jessica and I to get … Continue reading 31 Days of Giving, Day Nine: Meridian Senior Center

31 Days of Giving, Day Eight: Volunteers of America

Sunday morning I trekked through a snow covered Lansing to volunteer at the Volunteers of America Community Kitchen. A line of seniors, adults, young adults and children arrived early to wait for breakfast to begin at 8:00 am.  The Community Kitchen is open 365 days a year and provides free nutritious meals to the hungry and homeless. This past year the Community Kitchen set a … Continue reading 31 Days of Giving, Day Eight: Volunteers of America

31 Days of Giving, Day Seven: Volunteers of America

Yesterday, I worked at the Volunteers of America Thrift Store. I worked while they were having a huge clothing sale, so they asked me to help sort and organize clothing. This seemed to be easy enough task, but I quickly discovered it wasn’t due to the crowds of people sifting through the racks for the best deals. As I sorted the clothing, making sure that … Continue reading 31 Days of Giving, Day Seven: Volunteers of America

What is “31 Days of Giving”?

Elder Law of Michigan has initiated a month-long volunteer campaign called “31 Days of Giving.” Starting December 1st, staff and volunteers from Elder Law of Michigan will venture out into the community and participate in one day of “giving,” and volunteer their time at a local organization every day in December. 31 Days of Giving, Day Six: Ingham County TRIAD & Capital Area Community Services

Yesterday I had the opportunity to volunteer at two organizations who help meet the needs of seniors. In the morning I helped assemble 300 baskets for Ingham County TRIAD’s ‘No senior without Christmas’. Ingham County TRIAD is a partnership among law enforcement agencies, fire personnel, senior citizens, and community members which promotes elder quality of life through advocacy assistance, education and training. No Senior without … Continue reading 31 Days of Giving, Day Six: Ingham County TRIAD & Capital Area Community Services

31 Days of Giving, Day Five: City Rescue Mission

Yesterday I volunteered at the City Rescue Mission, dating and sorting canned goods. The City Rescue Mission serves about 150 meals to people each evening. Some of those individuals are at the women and children’s location, so those meals are prepared with the others at the East Michigan location and then transported in “hot boxes” to their center. They also serve breakfast and lunch, which … Continue reading 31 Days of Giving, Day Five: City Rescue Mission

31 Days of Giving, Day Four: Riverfront Housing Complex

My day of volunteering was at the Riverfront Housing Complex located on the Grand River in downtown Lansing. The complex houses more than 220 seniors and people with disabilities. I met Cindy Chapin, an employee of the Tri-County Office on Aging, who is the provider of on-site hot and cold meals for 60 plus residents. We started our morning by bringing both a hot noontime meal and leaving … Continue reading 31 Days of Giving, Day Four: Riverfront Housing Complex

31 Days of Giving, Day Three: Closing the Digital Gap

I arrived at Closing the Digital Gap (CTDG) unsure what to expect. My volunteer session was set up and I was told I would be doing some technical assistance in addition to possibly answering some legal questions. At that time I wasn’t even entirely sure what the CTDG did. As I later learned, CTDG focuses on expanding access to computing based technology. The organization’s primary … Continue reading 31 Days of Giving, Day Three: Closing the Digital Gap
